Hello. My name is Negar Ekbatani and I am going to be your child’s Teacher for the upcoming year at Woodland Elementary. I am so excited about this opportunity to work with your child.
I want to give you a bit of background information regarding my teaching experiences. I have been teaching in the field of special education since 1998 when I graduated from Temple University with an Early Childhood, Elementary, and Special Education BS degree. I have my Teaching Certification for both PA and HI. I have had the opportunity to work with all different ages of students as well as variety of different categories within the special education setting. I taught in the Philadelphia School District for several years before getting recruited by the State of Hawaii to teach there. I taught at the elementary school level on the Big Island of Hawaii for eight years. I had the opportunity to run the special education department within my school and worked with students with varying disabilities within the Kindergarten to Fifth grade years. It allowed me to build my experience and see lots of good progress with the individuals who I had the opportunity and pleasure to work with. I returned to PA from Hawaii in January of 2010 and began teaching at Methacton School District in Sept. 2010.
I would like to give you some information regarding our classroom here at Woodland Elementary. As you know order and routine is a key element to students in a school setting. Therefore we will have set routines and schedules that we will follow within this classroom to make your child’s daily life here at school pleasant as well as productive. There will be certain days that call for a specialty schedule which I will also provide as we move along throughout the school year. However the daily routine and rituals of the class will generally stay the same. Within the first week of school, you will be receiving a class schedule which will tell you the general order that will be followed throughout the day within your child’s educational setting. The methods of teaching that I use in our setting, is all based upon your child’s individual needs. We will have small group activities, individualized activities, center based activities, therapies provided via Speech and Occupational therapy in the integrated style as well as individual basis, as well as activities geared towards working on social, behavioral, and developmental activities to meet your child’s needs. Each student will have a communications folder which will contain information which may need to be reviewed and return to school or keep at home. This folder will also contain a communication tablet which will tell you about your child’s day at school. In addition your child will be attending the inclusion setting within appropriate grade level for special classes such as music, art, gym/PE, health, lunch, and recess with same age peers. Please make sure that your child is prepared on days when he has gym/PE to be able to participate with the rest of his peers. This year's specials schedule will be listed under our daily schedule routine section of the site so refer to that for further information.
There are also many other opportunities where the students are involved within their regular education classroom based on skills and ability of the student per his or her IEP. These programs may include science, social studies, ELA activities, as well as math activities. As much as we can based on each students individual needs, we will follow the inclusion model and provide support and differentiated instruction with in the regular education environment.
I addition to curriculum type activities for all students, our class has also created an art/social skill time with all there regular education same age peers grouped to spend time with my student and allow for a close and social interaction between them to allow for further development of friendship and knowledge of one another. This will allow for further practice of all social and behavioral skills learned outside of our immediate classroom.I would also like to know some things that help in motivating your child and have a positive reinforcement effect on him. This way I can use some ideas as motivators in our daily learning environment (ex: favorite characters from a TV show or movie, stickers, food item allowed, activity, computer program, toy, sensory item, place to visit, instrument, playground equipment, etc…)
In addition to myself, there will be a classroom assistant who will also be in your child’s daily environment. Her name is Mrs. Linda Milligan who has had experience with working with special needs students for over 10 years. I am thrilled to have such a wonderful caring person be with us to help with the daily classroom activities. Below you will find my contact information. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or need to discuss anything regarding your child. Emailing is usually the best way to be able to stay in touch with me since I am able to check it often and sometimes phone calls will go straight to the voice mail setting during class time. However in event of emergencies please contact the front office at Woodland Elementary and they will make sure the messages are received by the correct individual. In the event that you need to visit the classroom please call the office to make let them know of your visit since there are new procedures within the district setting for visitors within the schools.
I am extremely happy to be here at Woodland Elementary and am looking forward to working with you and your child. Attached you will find a sheet which contain information that has to be filled out and send back to me as soon as possible. Thanks again for your time and I am looking forward to a wonderful year ahead.
Sincerely yours,
Negar Ekbatani
