• Integrated Language Arts (ILA) - Grade 5

The fifth grade curriculum is a standards-based program designed to meet the needs of Methacton students. The program features materials from Harcourt Storytown, a data-driven, research-based program for English Language Arts instruction. The program offers opportunities for differentiation, focusing on skills and strategies at each grade level covering all genres of literature as well as a variety of writing modalities. Decoding and encoding strategies, skills, and methods are explicitly and implicitly taught along with writing skills, strategies, and techniques and grammar concepts.

Instruction in fifth grade ILA focuses on decoding, vocabulary and concept development, fluency, comprehension and analysis of text, study skills, research and information, viewing media, literary response and analysis, and penmanship. Writing skills, strategies, and techniques in the fifth grade curriculum include narrative, expository, and persuasive writing; developing sentences structure, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Listening and speaking skills and strategies are also a focus of instruction, modeling, practice, and application.
