    INTEGRATED LANGUAGE ARTS

    The Kindergarten students will develop skills in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking through the use of the reading program called Storytown, published by Harcourt. This research-based program offers a balanced approach to literacy learning that incorporates shared reading, guided reading and independent reading, as well as focused skill and strategy instruction. Systematic instructions in the five areas of reading instruction – phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, robust vocabulary, and comprehension – are included. Storytown also integrates writing into the reading process.

    Children will:

    • Participate in shared and repeated readings of stories
    • Develop comprehension skills: determining main idea and details, making predictions, and drawing conclusions
    • Listen to and discuss stories
    • Identify capital and lowercase letters in mixed order
    • Print all letters appropriately
    • Associate sounds with the correct letter
    • Apply knowledge of letter sounds to written expression
    • Space words correctly when writing
    • Show awareness of proper capitalization
    • Show awareness of ending punctuation
    • Write 2 or 3 sentences about a topic
    • Identify and produce rhymes
    • Recognize all sight words

    There are many words that are introduced throughout the year. The students should be able to recognize these words by sight at the end of the year:

    MATHEMATICS
    Children will:
    • Read numbers 0 to 30
    • Count from 0 to 5
    • Write numbers from 0 to 3
    • Relate sets of objects to a numeral up to 30
    • Identify circle, rectangle, triangle, and square
    • Identify sphere and cube
    • Create, extend, and describe a pattern
    • Count backwards from 22 or higher
    • Estimate the number of objects in a collection
    • Compare and order numbers to 20
    • Count by 2s to at least 30
    • Count by 5s to 100
    • Count by 10s to 100
    • Identify pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar bills

    Play fair, take turns, share, watch the clouds float by, hold hands, read a book for the joy of the story, take time out for a little snack, skip when you are happy, share your thoughts and feelings, and above all, enjoy yourself!
