    What is TEAMS?

TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science) is an annual science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) competition that challenges middle school and high school student teams to work collaboratively to solve real-world engineering challenges, applying their math and science knowledge in practical, creative ways.

After participating in TEAMS—students increase their knowledge of engineering; feel more confident about participating in STEM activities; and increase their ability to work with others to solve complex problems.

The 2020 TEAMS competitions take place between February 5th and March 8th. Teams of four to eight students compete at a local host site or at their own school for competition day and state awards. Top-ranking state teams are invited to compete for Best in Nation.

    This one-day, three-part competition includes:

    • Design/Build—Teams design and build a solution to an engineering challenge.
    • Multiple Choice—Teams use math and science skills to solve real-world engineering challenges.
    • Essay—Teams research and write an in-depth essay submitted electronically prior to their competition day.

Focused on a theme each year, original academic and innovative concepts are developed for the TEAMS competition based on the National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenges. Tackling these challenges requires critical job-readiness skills such as collaboration, analytical thinking, and multi-dimensional problem-solving. The theme for 2020 is “Engineering in the Wild.”

TEAMS is open to all interested middle school and high school students. Teams compete at one of three levels: middle school, 9th/10th grade, or 11th/12th grade. Coaches may register their team(s) online in September.
