    Witness by Karen Hesse

    Night by Elie Wiesel

Purpose Statement: The two novels revolve around human morality and the question of what is right and what is wrong. After
reading, you will demonstrate through both a performance task and a project-based assessment your understanding of the
themes that are common to both novels. In addition, you will analyze the plot, paying specific attention to elements of fiction,
    nonfiction, and poetry.

    Whirligig by Paul Fleischman

Purpose Statement: Brent is on the journey of his life. His experiences become his “second education.” Pay attention to what
he has learned from each of those experiences. You will be tested on the details from the novel and expected to present
information that will support this idea of his “second education.”
