Methacton's World Language courses allow students to study one language for several years so that the language can be used as another learning tool. The language being taught will be the language of the classroom
In addition to speaking, listening, reading, and writing the language, students learn how people live in other parts of the world. The knowledge of how other people work, play, raise families, and run governments can be valuable in many classes outside of the World Language Department.
The possibilities of using foreign language skills in a career can not be ignored. Many government and international business jobs demand foreign language ability.

Offered in grades 9-12 1.0 credit
Class meets 6 mods per cycle, all year
The first year covers basic vocabulary and simple sentence structure. Emphasis
is on pronunciation and introductory conversation. Cultural instruction on
geography, family life and the German school system is included. Spoken, written
and creative work samples will be placed in the student portfolio. Each chapter
of the text is supplemented with authentic internet readings.0301 GERMAN II

Recommendation: German I - 70% average
This course is a continuation of the grammar and vocabulary building of
German I. Realistic dialogs, communicative activities, listening/written activities
and portfolio work give the student an opportunity to learn and practice the
language and culture of Germany. Each chapter of the text is supplemented with
authentic internet readings.
0302 GERMAN III
Offered in grades 10-12 1.0 credit
Class meets 6 mods per cycle, all year
Recommendation: German I, II - 70% average
Along with the text Deutsch Aktuell, additional forms of reading are used;
readers, magazines, newspapers, and conversational texts. Instruction of
complex sentence structure is introduced in order to aid the student’s comprehension
of German. Each chapter of the text is supplemented with authentic
internet readings.
0303 GERMAN IV
Offered in grades 11,12 1.0 credit
Class meets 6 mods per cycle, all year
Recommendation: German I, II, III - 70% average
This course will enable the advanced students to increase their knowledge of
vocabulary and complex sentence structure for actual application in reading
literature, magazines, newspapers, and listening to videos, television programs,
and cassettes. Students use the Internet for additional authentic reading and

Offered in grade 12 1.0 credit
Class meets 6 mods per cycle, all year
Recommendation: German I, II, III, IV - 70% average
Using the next level of the text Deutsch Aktuell, the class studies the history
and literature of Germany. Oral proficiency is stressed in discussions of daily
life, politics, and current events. Additional readings are taken from other
sources, including fairy tales, novels, and plays. Students use the Internet for
additional authentic reading and information.
0310 FRENCH I
Offered in grades 9-12 1.0 credit
Class meets 6 mods per cycle, all year
This course is based on the text, Dis-moi, which presents an introduction and
study of elementary grammar points, basic vocabulary words presented through
dialogues, and an introduction to the French speaking world. Oral proficiency
through a communicative approach is stressed.0311 FRENCH IIA
Offered in grades 9-12 1.0 credit
Class meets 6 mods per cycle, all year
Recommendation: French I - 70% average
This course is based on the text Dis-moi and is an extension of the French I
course. The grammar is more complex and the basic vocabulary words increase.
Oral proficiency is the goal through communication in real situations.
0312 FRENCH IIB
Offered in grade 9 1.0 credit
Class meets 6 mods per cycle, all year
Recommendation: Approval of Department
This course covers the same curriculum as French IIA differing only in the faster
pace of the class. Students are expected to perform at a higher level of
proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Offered in grades 10-12 1.0 credit
Class meets 6 mods per cycle, all year
Recommendation; French I, II - 70% average
This course is based on the text Viens voir. Verb tense competency is
increased and vocabulary becomes more categorical and it is an extension of
the basic. Oral proficiency is the goal with improved listening and speaking skills.
More attention is also given to the areas of reading and writing. Authentic
materials are used to present cultural concepts.
0314 FRENCH IV
Offered in grades 11,12 1.0 credit
Class meets 6 mods per cycle, all year
Recommendation: French I, II, III - 70% average
This course is based on the second half of Viens Voir and is a continuation
French III. The course offers a more complex study of the French language
and culture presented almost entirely in French through speaking, listening,
reading, and writing.
0315 FRENCH V

Class meets 6 mods per cycle, all year
Recommendation: 70% average in French IV
This course is based on C’est ca!. This course attempts to perfect the
student's language skills in all areas -- listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Categorized and situational vocabulary are reviewed through games and
projects. Speaking and listening skills are practiced though question and answer
sessions. Grammar is practiced through writing activities. Culture is explored
through authentic readings in the target language.
0330 SPANISH I

This course is based on a communicative approach. The textbook series ¡ Ven
conmigo!, is the student’s passport to proficiency. Students are shown how
use language in a cultural context and are drawn into the Spanish-speaking

language-learning develops students’ listening, reading, writing, and speaking
skills with a wide variety of fun, engaging, and imaginative activities and projects

The Spanish II Honors program is designed for the student who has demonstrated
a strong aptitude for foreign language in the first year of study. The
curriculum for Spanish II Honors is similar to Spanish II, but the content is faster
paced with greater emphasis on oral proficiency, reading, and writing skills.
Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite to continue in future honors
language classes.
